Killarney Combats Green Fee Madness!

13 February 2007

Killarney Golf & Fishing Club has just announced that they have made an unprecedented decision as one of the leading golf clubs in Ireland, not to put up Green Fees for 2007.    This is against a backdrop where most leading Irish golf clubs have raised their green fees by on average 10%.

2006 was an extremely successful year for the Club, with the critically acclaimed re-opening of Killeen, the Club's flagship course, record number of golfers using all three of the Club's Championship Courses during the Golfing Season and on top of this the Club has just processed a record number of new members joining at the start of the new Club year.

"Our decision for this price freeze was simple" stated Tom Prendergast, Club Secretary/Manager.  "With the re-opening of Killeen we have increased our capacity once more, offering great choice to the golfing visitor - at the same time we also want to offer visiting golfers value".  "With the recent climate of price hikes, we wished to make our own little stand, by offering prices that we believe are sustainable to the market, not just overseas but to our all important Irish Golfer as well".

Killarney through the choice of three championship courses creates great quality options for all levels of golfers.

  • Mahony's Point: The shortest of the courses at 6,164 mts, is a lakeside course with spectacular views including the famous, breathtaking 18th described by Gene Sarazen as "one of the most memorable holes in the world".
  • Lackabane: Opened for play in 1999 is a Parkland course providing an excellent golfing challenge with enough water hazards that add both beauty and danger in equal measure.
  • Killeen: The Club's flagship course, re-opened in 2006 offering both spectacular lakeside scenery and also challenging golf to long hitters with water features on nearly every hole and fast greens. Nick Faldo, on winning the first of his two successive Irish Opens in 1991, was one of only three players to finish under par. That was before the changes in 2006 which will provide an even tougher challenge.

Marcus Treacy, Board Member at the Killarney Golf & Fishing Club stated "Price may not be a deciding factor for many visiting Golfers, but the Irish and European Markets in particular  are very price conscious.  It is our aim in 2007 and beyond to encourage these markets to play Killarney, with as many quality value options as possible, working with other leading Golf Clubs, such as Ballybunion on good value Golf Passes, and offering our own golf bundles if golfers are playing more than one of our courses over a few days. "Of course we have our premium rates for playing at peak times, but golfers looking for quality value options can easily be accommodated with rates as low as €40 for off-peak play during the summer."

He added "It is our hope that in future other leading clubs will follow suit.  2006 was a great year for golf in Ireland.  This worldwide interest, created in a good part by the platform of the Ryder Cup needs to be nurtured and encouraged by maintaining quality courses with realistic pricing structures"

Full details of pricing structure for all three championship courses can be found on the official Killarney Golf & Fishing Club Website, www.killarney-golf.com.  There are many choices, from bundle packages, to Monday-Tuesday Rates and Sunset Rates on offer, showing that not only is Killarney Golf & Fishing Club leading the way on Quality Championship Courses, but creating great value for golfing in Ireland.
