A Picture Worth A Thousand Smiles

Help-Portrait is a global movement of photographers offering their time, gear and expertise for free to give back to those in need in the community. The unique initiative was founded last year by celebrity photographer Jeremy Cowart in USA. Ireland took part with an event held in Cork - Help Portrait Cork.

Due to the success of last year, Help Portrait Cork will take place again this weekend, on Sunday 5th December, 10am - 3pm, at the Clarion Hotel.

The event, being organised by local Cork businessman Paul O'Mahony and professional photographer Roger Overall, is all about restoring the self-confidence of people who have had a rough time of it in 2010, and making them feel good about themselves. The magic behind the event is the simple act of taking professional portrait photos of people, with the help of make-up artists and hairdressers who are all giving their time for free.

Each individual leaves Help Portrait Cork with memories of a lovely experience and a printed portrait of themselves.

Paul O'Mahony says: "Last year we photographed a cross-section of people, who for whatever reason needed a lift. We had people who had lost everything in the floods for instance. People who had lost their jobs. People who just needed to feel special for a couple of hours. Whatever your circumstances, if you need a boost and something to pick you up, you are welcome to come along on Sunday."

Paul is delighted so many people are volunteering again this year "I was so moved last year witnessing firsthand the pure joy and emotion of deserving people feeling good about themselves. They each received special and individual attention. This event wouldn't be possible without people being so generous with their time and skills - and the Clarion Hotel giving us use of their terrific facilities for free."

Besides Cork the only other place in Ireland in which this special event will be happening is in Belfast.
