RETRACE THE WORLD WAR II ROME FOOTSTEPS OF HUGH O’FLAHERTY “THE VATICAN PIMPERNEL” 8th – 12th October 2012

10 April 2012

During World War II, this Irishman, together with a band of escaped British Servicemen and natives of Rome, formed the famous “Rome Escape Line”.  Despite having a death warrant issued against him, the Monsignor persisted with his “Rome Escape Line”, which directly saved over 6,500 American and British prisoners of war, Jews and other Roman citizens from arrest or re-capture and almost certain death.  The resilient Kerryman lived up to the simple yet profound principle of “God Has No Country”.

The Monsignor’s story was brought to life in Gregory Peck’s 1983 film “The Scarlet and the Black”, as well as other feature films and best-selling books; and he was honoured by many nations for his work in coming to the aid of the oppressed.

Now for the first time ever, an organised four night escorted tour, will retrace the Monsignor’s steps as he evaded capture from the Nazis. Joining the group on this inspiring journey will be members of the O’Flaherty family and others with an in-depth knowledge of the person behind the name.

An interesting itinerary has been put together, taking in the Vatican, The Irish and German Colleges, the Ardeatine Caves and other places associated with his life, as well as important events of wartime Rome. The itinerary will also include all of the major sites in Rome like The Catacombs, major Basilicas, Roman Forum, the Colosseum, Trevi Fountain, Spanish Steps etc. There will also be some time for shopping and site seeing.

This trip, which takes place from October 8th to 12th, is open to all those interested in celebrating the life of this great Irishman and learning more about his work in World War II Rome.  Full details are available on www.hughoflaherty.com  and an information pack and booking forms are available from Killarney Chamber Office by calling (064) 6637928.
