Sober Lane - the Official Movember Pub of Cork

Movember aims to change established habits and attitudes men have about their health, to educate men about the health risks they face, and to act on that knowledge, thereby increasing the chances of early detection, diagnosis and effective treatment. Phil Ryan, Manager of Sober Lane says “Men can sometimes lack awareness about the very real health issues they may face and often we are not as vigilant as women when it comes to our health.  Movember helps to create awareness and make male health fun and something we can all talk about, by putting the Mo (moustache) back on the face of fashion and in the process raise some serious funds for men's health issues”.

 

At the start of Movember guys register with a clean shaven face. The Movember participants also known as “Mo Bros”, then have the remainder of the month to grow and groom their “Mo” (slang for moustache) and along the way raise awareness and funds for men's health issues - specifically prostate cancer.

 

This is the fourth year Sober Lane are taking part in the fund raising event and have raised over €30,000 for prostate cancer to date. Phil is delighted with the support they receive each year “We usually have about 150-200 participants take part each year, made up of some of our regular customers and all the Sober Lane male bar staff.  It’s become almost a badge of honour now to grow a Mo in November! ”

The funds raised for Movember in Ireland are directed to programmes run by Movember and their men’s health partner, Action Prostate Cancer, an initiative from the Irish Cancer Society.

The official Movember Cork closing gala will be held in Sober Lane on the 28th November with a charity shave off. Phil hopes to see yet another great turnout for the closing event “We invite everyone to come along – it’s always great fun while raising funds for a very worthy cause at the same time.”
