Cork County Senior and Premier Intermediate Hurling Championship to to bring Cork Rebel Week to a close October 20th 2013

03 April 2013

Cork  Rebel Week  2013 will take place between the14th & 20th October, 2013. It will be a week-long celebration of “All things Cork" with a specific focus on bringing International visitors and family home to Cork County and Cork City throughout the week.

Tracey Kennedy, PRO of Cork GAA, is thrilled to be able to work with Cork Rebel Week and says “Cork County Board is delighted that our County Senior Hurling Final has been fixed to coincide with Cork Rebel Week. This is the key event in the Cork GAA calendar, and it's very fitting that it will now play a key role in this celebration of all things Cork. The GAA at all levels is supporting The Gathering 2013, and this is our chance to be part of it.”

The initiative of Cork Rebel Week is to attract International visitors as well as friends & family of Cork living abroad to come visit  and attend the various events and activities    all of which will boost the economy and awareness of Cork during what is traditionally low season within the Tourism, Hospitality, Retail and Leisure Industries. The concept surrounding Rebel Week we believe will embrace the imagination of Corkonians living locally, nationally and Internationally with the strong potential of Rebel Week becoming a new annual event in the National Events Calendar.

There is a great line up of  Cork Rebel Week Events & attractions will include;

  • The availability of a Cork Rebel Week Passport to International visitors which will give the holder entitlement to extensive discounts and offers across the County in Accommodation, Hospitality, Retail and Leisure during Rebel Week. Locals can also obtain a passport via initiatives around supporting and promoting the concept.
  • International Marching Bands integrating in the community of Cork County and City. Local Communities in towns and districts throughout Cork will host the bands and will organise local events and activities throughout the week with the highlight of an International Cork Parade and Primary Activities in Cork City over the weekend, October 19th & 20th.
  • International Cork Day – Wednesday October 16th in celebration of both the birthday of Michael Collins and International Food Day. Visas will be issued at all County borders to gain access to Cork on the day in exchange for a donation to Cork local charities.
  • International Sporting Events – throughout the week and across the various fields of sport.
  • The Global Cork Economic Forum & the Global Cork Network – the sons and daughters of Cork will be individually invited home to take part in meaningful discussions and receive a greater understanding of economic renewal and job creation, specific to Cork City and County. They will also be allowed to have fun!

This week-long programme to attract over 5,000 overseas visitors to the Cork region will be brought to Cork by its two local authorities, Cork County and City Councils, who take their responsibility to drive tourism and economic development very seriously, and see Rebel Week as a fantastic way of shining the international spotlight on Cork. The week-long event is being organised and managed by Corporate.ie on behalf of Cork County and City Councils.

Cork Rebel Week is all about FUN, while helping the Cork economy in the short and long term. Rebel Week needs buy-in from the People and Businesses of Cork to create the best “new” National Event as part of the Gathering Celebration 2013 that has the vision to become a New Annual Event in the National Calendar.
