And The Journey Begins..... Cycle Against Suicide

22 April 2013

Early this morning, Irish celebrities Colm Hayes, Ryan Tubridy, Roz Purcell, Rosanna Davison, PJ Gallagher, The Heathers, Jason Sherlock, and Brent Pope joined over four hundred other cyclists, from all walks in life, as they set off on their bikes to begin what could be the most important cycle of their lives, the Cycle Against Suicide.

With up to 3,500 cyclists registered in total, the Cycle Against Suicide, an awareness building cycling event, will take place all around Ireland.  Covering over  1,400km in 14 days, the Cycle will visit towns and villages all over Ireland including Wexford, Waterford, Cork, Killarney, Tralee, Limerick, Galway, Ballinrobe, Sligo, Letterkenny, Moville, Manorhamilton, Cavan, Monaghan and Dundalk.

The Cycle will also be visiting 28 schools and colleges around the country, hosting mental health presentations and highlighting the local mental health services that are available in each location.

The idea behind the project was developed by successful entrepreneur and international businessman Jim Breen, following the screening of a TV documentary ‘The Secret Millionaire’ which showed Jim visiting a suicide awareness group.

Speaking at the event, Jim said “3,500 of us are cycling some or all of the 1,400km over the next two weeks.  However, it’s been a much longer journey for many people to get to the starting line here today.  We’re all here with one goal - to cycle around Ireland – and Break the cycle of suicide!”

2FM’s Colm Hayes also spoke at the event, and said "We've dealt with the issue of mental health so much on our show and what became apparent from our discussions is how much physical health and mental health go hand in hand.  The Cycle Against Suicide really highlights this fact. We need to encourage people to talk about mental health openly."

Cycle Against Suicide organisers are asking residents, and those living in the surrounding areas, to show their support by cheering on the cyclists as the peloton cycles through their home towns and villages.

For those wishing to get involved and help “Break the Cycle” of suicide in Ireland, you can do so by registering online at www.cycleagainstsuicide.com at least 24 hours in advance of the start of each day’s cycle, or at the on-site registration at the starting point of any of the legs.

Details of the starting points of each leg, and any further information required, can be found at www.cycleagainstsuicide.com.
