10km in your 5km Mini Marathon

10km in your 5km Mini Marathon

20 May 2020

Families around Ireland are taking part in their own mini marathon on Sunday 31st of May to support CRY Ireland (Cardiac Risk in the Young) while COVID-19 restrictions are in place. The idea is to run, walk or cycle 10km in your 5km radius.

Each year the Women’s Mini Marathon sees #TeamCRY take part in the 10km challenge for CRY Ireland. CRY is an Irish registered charity that supports the CRY Centre who provides cardiac screening and evaluation for families who have lost a young person to sudden cardiac death (SCD) and provides counselling and support to families affected. Many of those that take part in the mini marathon include families and friends that have been affected.

Nicola Finn from Dublin lost her husband, Andrew to SCD 10 years ago. She was pregnant with their first child at the time. After receiving support from CRY, Nicola and her family have shown endless support to CRY by getting involved in various fundraisers. Nicola’s hopes of doing the Mini Marathon to commemorate Andrew’s 10th anniversary while being surrounded by her family during such a sensitive time has been stripped due to the recent pandemic.

Nicola commented “CRY has become an integral part of our lives and the services they provide are truly invaluable. I’m asking the public to join me and take to the street to do 10km within your 5km. By getting involved and donating, CRY can save lives and continue to support families like mine. I’m hoping we can manage to raise a fraction of the amount we normally do. It may not be millions but it all helps.”

The 10k in your 5k - Women’s Mini Marathon will take place at 2pm on Sunday 31st of May. CRY are asking people to don a white t-shirt and run, walk or cycle 10km in your 5km radius. A donation to CRY would also be greatly appreciated. The Mini Marathon will give families and friends the opportunity to continue their support of CRY while feeling connected with one another during a time of social distancing.

Lucia Ebbs, CEO of CRY Ireland said “Due to Covid-19 routine services at the CRY Centre are deferred but we are available for urgent issues. All of our fundraisers have been hugely impacted and we are so grateful to all the families and friends who have continued to support us during this time. We hope that you will join us on May 31st in doing 10K in your 5K and don’t forget to tag us in all your posts.”

One lucky participant will be in a chance to win a fabulous 2-night stay for 2 people in an Executive Room at Belfast’s luxury Grand Central Hotel, to include a bottle of bubbly on arrival and dinner for two in the hotel’s highly-acclaimed Seahorse Restaurant. Sponsored by Lanyon Group. Simply tag CRY with your picture after your 10k in your white T-shirt either on Instagram or Facebook to be in a chance of winning.
