Last night Teresa and Michael O' Neil, owners of the family run Fernhill House Hotel, Clonakilty, officially launched their new bedroom development at a magical evening held on the premise. Local businesses, suppliers and friends were invited to attend the mulled wine and mince pie reception held in the welcoming foyer of the hotel which has been in Clonaklity for over forty years. Harpist Nancy Long and her daughter Miriam lent a festive atmosphere to the occasion playing some wonderful Christmas carols and favourite tunes. Magician Liam Sheehan, who famously entertained Michael Jackson’s children while they were in Cork, performed a plethora of mind boggling tricks on guests.

Cycling legend Sean Kelly reconfirmed his commitment to the Charity Cycle "Tour de Munster" last Saturday at a dinner he attended with the cyclists who took part in this year's 600km charity cycle around Munster. This year's tour managed to raise over 85,000 for the Chernobyl Children's Project International for their Chernobyl Heart Appeal. This means that 85 children will benefit from life saving operations which will correct heart defects caused by the repercussions of the Chernobyl disaster.Sean Kelly has been involved with the tour for the past three years.

Last night Plan Ireland, the children's development agency, hosted a photographic exhibition featuring photographs from World Press Photo winner (2005), Finbarr O'Reilly at the Malton Hotel Killarney. The exhibition entitled "Children of Burkina Faso - A Day in the Life" depicts images of daily activities of children in Burkina Faso, West Africa, one of the poorest countries in the world. The exhibition was attended by many Kerry supporters of the organisation. Town Mayor Michael Gleeson spoke passionately about the work carried out by Plan Ireland at the event. The recent death of writer Frank Deasy, who was waiting 7 months for a liver transplant, has heightened public attention on organ donation and transplant issues in Ireland in a way that has never happened before. While recent discussion has focussed on the need for more organ donation and transplants to be carried out in Ireland, there has been comparatively little discussion on what is actually needs to be put in place from a public policy perspective. At present there is no legislative or policy framework underpinning transplantation in Ireland. In this context the Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland (CFAI) is hosting a roundtable discussion with key experts, health care professionals and parents to discuss what policies need to be put in place.

The recently restored Fota House in Carrigtwohill is to host an exhibition of 300 unique portraits of Cork personalities dating from 1600 to the present day. "Inheritance – Honouring the Cork Legacy" is part of a Cork Civic Trust three-year project conceived in 2007 by businessman and Cork Civic Trust Director Michael Mulcahy and artist Kevin Sanquest. The fine art portraits by Kevin Sanquest honour Cork people who contributed enormously to the social and commercial fabric of Cork life and around the world and will be exhibited as part of a long-term loan from March 2010.

It has just been announced that Sharon Commins and her fellow hostage Hilda Kawuki will be awarded the first Hugh O'Flaherty International Humanitarian Award in Killarney on Saturday November 7th. Last year Monsignor Hugh O’Flaherty (1898-1963) was awarded a posthumous Killarney International Humanitarian Award in recognition of his selfless humanitarian work in Italy during World War II which saved the lives of over 6,500 people. It was decided that this award would be an annual award and re-named in honour of the Monsignor.

The Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland (CFAI) has launched a major National Campaign to fundraise for dedicated CF units throughout the country. The "Buy a Brick" Campaign plans to raise over €2.5million to ensure that young people living with CF have dedicated CF units in their regions, taking pressure off the major CF centres in Dublin. The campaign will be asking people to support fundraising initiatives in their areas, which will be raising money to help fund a National Building Programme that will build these units throughout Ireland.

Green Ireland Survey reveals Irish Businesses to be Green despite the Economic Climate A recent survey carried out by new environmental magazine Green Ireland? found that there is an overwhelming support among Irish Businesses to support Green initiatives.The survey was carried out on over 100 businesses all over Ireland across a variety of sectors from retail outlets to construction companies to public organisations. Of those surveyed 36% said that their businesses were green, 14% said that they were very green and 47% felt they could be better. Only 3% felt that their businesses were not green at all.

At the recent Joint Oireachtas Health Committee with Minister Harney where it was revealed that the St. Vincent's CF unit was postponed until 2011 at the earliest, misleading information about the state of Cystic Fibrosis in Ireland was disclosed, which the CFAI would like to correct. The CFAI believe that this information may have inadvertently influenced the decision and today, as an 11th hour bid before tomorrow’s budget, are asking the Minister, the HSE and the Department of the Health to review their decision and reverse the postponement of the lifesaving CF unit at St Vincent's.

Just two months after the shock announcement of the closure of the Quality Resort Killarney, with the loss of jobs and trade for the town, the business has been given a lifeline. The former GM, Patrick Dillon and Financial Controller, Paul O’Shea have negotiated a deal with Hepton Developments, the owners of the property, to take over the franchise of the hotel on a long lease, and will re-open on Thursday 9th April, securing 60 jobs initially for Killarney, growing up to 200 jobs in high season.

About six months ago publisher Brian Coogan made a decision to start questioning all things Green…. He was on his way home from a visit to the Dáil where he had met with a senior Green Party politician. Brian had come to one of Ireland’s leading "Green" figures to get feedback on his proposed new title "Green Ireland" which is scheduled to launch in April, to discuss issues that would be key to this new magazine. What he found on his visit both annoyed and disturbed him.

The Radio Kerry Ring of Kerry Cycle, now in its 26th year, is the biggest one day charity fundraising event in Munster, raising vital funds for Kerry based Charities with thousands of cyclists from all over Ireland cycling 112 miles of the spectacular Ring of Kerry. Today it was announced that Olympian and Killarney native Gillian O'Sullivan will be contributing to the official website of the event which will take place this year on Saturday 4th July.

Staff at University College Cork will be in for a treat tomorrow on Shrove Tuesday when they enjoy a special pancake morning at the Prestigious Hayfield Manor, a stone's throw from the college. From 10:15 hungry staff will make their way up the tree lined avenue and into Perrotts Garden Bistro to enjoy a variety of sweet and savoury pancakes made by head chef Graeme Campbell and of course, morning coffee. It is hoped that those enjoying these delicious pancakes will then offer a donation to Enable Ireland, Cork Services, raising much needed funds for the Loughana Centre.

The event, now in its 26th year, is the biggest one day charity fundraising event in Munster, attracting thousands of leisure cyclists who will experience a fun and rewarding day's cycling, completing 112 miles of the spectacular Ring of Kerry, while at the same time fundraising for worthy Kerry based Charities. To date the Ring of Kerry Cycle has raised over €3 million for Kerry Charities and to support this massive fundraising initiative the Radio Kerry Community Fund, a fund that was set up by Radio Kerry to raise money for Kerry Community and Charity projects, has come on board as event sponsor.
