Put Your Thinking COP On: Young People Take Climate Action Ahead of COP26 With ECO-UNESCO’s 2021 Youth Climate Summit

Every Wednesday from the 20th of October until the 11th of November, young people across Ireland will get the opportunity to get involved in climate action as part of a  National Youth Climate Summit organised by ECO-UNESCO and 4 national youth organisations as part of the Youth Climate Justice Challenge. 

 

The Summit will take place online, in the run up and during COP26. COP26 is the 26th United Nations Climate Change conference that is scheduled to be held in the city of Glasgow, Scotland, between 31 October and 12 November 2021. In celebration of this, the Youth Climate Summit will run a series of online environmental activities and events for young people aged 10 to 18 years of age to learn more about climate issues and what they can do to make a positive environmental difference.

 

The Youth Climate Summit is part of the Youth Climate Justice Challenge, a consortium of 5 national youth organizations led by ECO-UNESCO, Ireland’s leading environmental education and youth organisation, that empowers young people to make a positive environmental difference, and includes  Gaisce, Irish Girl Guides, No Name Club and Young Irish Filmmakers and funded by the DCEDIY.

 

Elaine Nevin, National Director of ECO-UNESCO said, “The motive behind this Summit came from the results of our Climate Justice Survey in 2020, where a significant number of young people felt their voices on Climate Change were unheard.”

 

“58% of young people also said they would like more local opportunities to get involved in climate action. This Youth Climate Summit is the perfect platform for young people to have their voices heard as well as gain the knowledge and tools to make a positive environmental impact.”

 

Special guests involved in the summit UN Observer and Senator Pauline O'Reilly. ECO-UNESCO will be running a Climate Action workshop with SpunOut and SEAI will be talking about Sustainable Energy, closing the summit, young winners from the 2021 Young Environmentalists Awards will also share their solutions to climate issues and how young people can take action.
