‘Respect and Enjoy Howth’ campaign to launch as major trail upgrades near completion
Howth Special Amenity Area Order (SAAO) is pleased to announce that significant progress has been made in the ongoing upgrade of the Howth looped pathway network. The majority of these works are now completed following an investment of over €340k. This marks a major step forward in enhancing the quality, safety, and overall experience of Howth’s popular walking trails that have welcomed over 6.2 million pedestrians since 2018.
The extensive upgrades, now largely completed, are designed to improve safety, accessibility, and overall trail quality. These improvements bring the infrastructure in line with national standards and significantly enhance the walking experience for the thousands of visitors who enjoy Howth each week. The Balscadden Cliff path was particularly popular, recording over 2.6 million walkers between 2018 and 2024, with a peak of 452,410 in 2024. Similarly, the Howth Summit experienced record footfall last year with 476,698 visitors, highlighting the increasing demand for quality walking infrastructure in the area.
This significant project has been delivered through a collaborative effort involving Howth SAAO, Fingal County Council, FCC Operations and Biodiversity teams, and the dedicated Howth Pathways Volunteers.
In conjunction with the completion of these works, the Howth SAAO is launching a new ‘Respect and Enjoy Howth’ campaign. The initiative aims to encourage all those who visit the area to appreciate its unique landscape while also playing their part in protecting it.
Following this significant public investment, the ‘Respect and Enjoy Howth’ campaign aims to ensure that Howth is enjoyed responsibly and preserved. It encourages walkers to make the most of the improved trails, take care of the natural environment, and be considerate of local communities and fellow visitors.
Chair of Howth SAAO, Philip O’Connor, commented on the upgrades:
“This investment reflects the value placed on Howth’s trails by both the local community and the many people who visit to enjoy them. Thanks to the work of Fingal County Council and our dedicated volunteers, we’re ensuring these routes remain welcoming and meet the highest standards. This work is about maintaining and enhancing their standard, ensuring continued safety, accessibility, and a high-quality experience for all. It also serves as a reminder that Howth is a special place, and that simple actions like sticking to marked paths, leaving no trace, and respecting wildlife help preserve its beauty for everyone.”
The upgraded works were guided by a series of on-site consultation walkovers carried out by FCC staff and volunteers. These site visits ensured that decisions on repairs and improvements were well informed and environmentally sensitive.
Hans Visser, Biodiversity Officer of Fingal County Council also added: “As we continue to enhance the walking trails, it’s vital that we also foster a culture of respect when it comes to visiting Howth. The ‘Respect and Enjoy Howth’ campaign encourages all visitors to appreciate the beauty of this area while ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy it. With the significant upgrades now complete, we are calling on the public to be mindful of their impact on both the environment and the local community, helping to keep Howth a beautiful, welcoming destination for all.”
Final phase works are scheduled to begin shortly, continuing the ongoing commitment to maintaining and improving Howth’s walking infrastructure for years to come.
