    The final of this years search for Miss Christmas in Killarney took place on Friday 28th November at The Killarney Avenue Hotel. The popular event, formerly Miss Café Du Parc, was organised to raise vital funds for Build4Life, a Kerry based Charity which is fundraising to build Ireland's first Cystic Fibrosis Unit at Cork University Hospital. In total around €5,000 was raised on the night.

    The Animal Care Society (Cork) has appealed to the public to make a €5.00 donation online so that they may continue the work they began in 2000 in providing Care to all animals in Cork City and County during Animal Care Week. The organisation is staffed by volunteers who give their time and effort to saving animals who have been mistreated or even abandoned. Since the foundation of the organisation they have re-homed 6,000 animals and they also operate a Help Line Service which was set up in order to deal with animal welfare matters.     Talented Artist Stephen Murphy from Ovens Co.Cork was recently commissioned to paint a portrait of the late Monsignor Hugh O'Flaherty, which was unveiled last weekend in Killarney during a Memorial Weekend which celebrated the bravery of this Irishman who saved 6,500 lives during World War II. It is expected that this painting with a reserve value of €3,000 will be auctioned in February 2009 in order to raise funds to build a permanent memorial to this national hero who is barely recognised in Irish History. Currently all that marks his achievements is a grove of trees which was planted in 1994 in Killarney, the hometown of the Monsignor.

    Fernhill House Hotel in Clonakilty has just completed a development project which has seen the addition of sixteen new bedrooms to the property. These new bedrooms are a welcome addition to the hotel and were built by John Deasy of Deasy Construction. The decor of the new bedrooms was inspired by the new gardens at Fernhilll House Hotel which were unveiled last May. The idea was to bring the "outside in" and the use of colour in these rooms consists of mostly greens, browns and blues reflecting the beauty that is outside. A Wheelchair Friendly bedroom with bespoke bathroom and shower has also been added to the expansion. These new additions bring the number of hotel rooms in this Country House Hotel to thirty two.

    Today at the City Hall in Cork eighty amateur cyclists aged between 16 and 60 set off on a four day adventure to cycle 600 km around Munster for Enable Ireland a charity dedicated to taking action on disability. Sean Kelly, an avid supporter of the Tour De Munster joined the cyclists for breakfast at the Silver Springs Hotel prior to their departure. He then set off for the City Hall with the group where supporters included the Deputy Mayor John Buttimer and Chairman of Enable Ireland, Donal Cashman. The heavy rain forecast for the next few days has not deterred the group who maintain that even though cycling conditions are not ideal they are committed to this test of endurance for this noble cause and hopefully it will make people dig a little deeper when they see the bucket collectors. On a brighter note, there will be some sunshine on Sunday afternoon as the group make their way back to Cork following their mammoth journey.

    Build 4 Life is a joint fundraising venture between friends and family of Cystic Fibrosis Patients in Cork and Kerry to assist building a dedicated Cystic Fibrosis unit, the first of its kind in Ireland, in Cork University Hospital. One of the major activities of the Charity has been the building of two houses in the upmarket Clonough development in Castleisland, Co. Kerry, the proceeds from the sale of the houses going towards the fundraising drive. This week it was announced that both the houses have been sold in record time, thanks to the major awareness campaign, the dedication of the principals involved and people's willingness to get behind the project in everyway possible.
