The iconic Oyster Tavern welcomed a sea of famous faces last night at the highly anticipated official launch of the two storey venue. The ‘who's who’ of the Irish social scene and sports world descended on Patrick Street to toast the new bar.

Stars such as Pippa O'Connor and her husband Brian Ormond and rugby legend Peter O'Mahony all donned the red carpet on the night and enjoyed an evening full of surprises as the new Oyster Tavern was finally revealed after a €1.5million makeover.

The renowned 18th century bar underwent a significant transformation after being taken over by well-known publican and restaurateur Alan Clancy, who also owns House in Limerick, 37 Dawson Street, The Oak and House in Dublin.

Speaking at the launch Alan said “I am delighted to finally open the doors to the public and I would hope the people of Cork are going to love it. We have done our best to bring something new and exciting the city, and are thrilled to be working with The English Market to do something unique when it comes to our food offering. Tonight is a fantastic opportunity to showcase this, and I am thrilled with all the support we have received here in Cork.”

The official launch marked a very significant day for Cork city centre as The Oyster Tavern is part of the €50m redevelopment of The Capitol which has brought a breath of fresh air and energy to Cork's city centre. The Oyster Tavern will create in excess of 40 new jobs and the venue, along with the new retail outlets in The Capitol building, will bring some much needed footfall to this end of the city.

Speaking about the warm welcome and the positive feedback they have received so far, Alan continued “So far we have had very positive feedback from everyone who has popped in for a look. Everyone seems to have a story about The Oyster Tavern, and are keen to share very fond memories so it's lovely to be here and to see their reaction when they see the new Oyster Tavern. We can’t wait to welcome the people of Cork through the doors this weekend.”

The two storey bar and restaurant will cater for all tastes; the downstairs bar will lend itself towards a more chilled and laid back customer, while the upstairs bar will host a party atmosphere with food, DJ, cocktails, and dance areas. The Oyster Tavern will open daily serving great drink and great food and will open late every Friday, Saturday, and Bank Holiday Sunday night.
