The Kerry Branch of Down Syndrome Ireland (DSI) are set to host the inaugural Unsung Hero charity cycle on April 21st from Ballyseedy Home and Garden Centre, Tralee. The cycle will mark the official partnership announcement between Tour De Munster and the Munster branches of Down Syndrome Ireland as the main beneficiary of the 2018 Tour de Munster charity cycle, which has raised over €2.5 million for its beneficiaries since its inception in 2001 and takes place every August.

On Saturday, April 21st, The Unsung Hero cycle will pay homage to renowned explorer Tom Crean and will also remember DSI Kerry member Emily Keohane who sadly passed away last year. Emily and her father John have been involved in the Tour de Munster for many years and this year Emily will be fondly remembered on April 21st.

The 75km cycle will kick off at 10am from Ballyseedy Home and Garden Centre and will head west where cyclists will stop off along the way in Annascaul at Tom Crean's former pub, The South Pole Inn for refreshments before returning at 3pm.

For those not cycling, Ballyseedy Home and Garden Centre and DSI Kerry will host a fun filled day of family entertainment and food for everyone to enjoy on both Saturday the 21st and Sunday the 22nd of April. A host of sporting stars including former Irish rugby player David Wallace and Kerry football stars Aidan O’Mahony, Daniel Bohan, Kieran Donaghy, Killian Young, David Moran, Ronan Shanahan and Barry John Keane will also be in attendance on April 21st for an exciting spinathon with Radio Kerry broadcasting live from Ballyseedy on Saturday. Spin South West will broadcast live from Ballyseedy on Sunday, April 22 nd for another fun filled day.

Speaking at the recent launch of the Unsung Hero cycle, founder of Tour de Munster, Paul Sheridan commented, ‘We’re encouraging everyone to come along and join us on April 21st for a really special day of honouring our unsung heroes and remembering DSI Kerry member Emily Keohane. The cycle will cater for all levels, and for those not partaking in the cycle, we have a fantastic line up of family entertainment throughout the weekend at Ballyseedy Home and Garden Centre. We look forward to meeting everyone throughout this special weekend’.

The cycle is free to partake in, but donations to DSI Kerry are gratefully accepted at registration which begins at 9.15am from both Ballyseedy Home and Garden Centre and the Earl of Desmond Hotel. Cyclists who partake in the cycle will also be entered into a draw for a weekend stay in Tom Crean's refurbished home in Annascaul.
