ECO-UNESCO hosting Educator’s Week 2020 Ahead of the School Year

24 August 2020

ECO-UNESCO, Ireland’s environmental education and youth organisation calls for educators to help equip our future generation of leaders with the knowledge and skills to make a positive environmental impact and to support young people in their work. From the 24th to 26th of August, ECO-UNESCO will host a number of events and workshops for teachers and mentors to encourage a focus on sustainability and environmentalism in the upcoming school year.

On Monday the 24th of August, Minister for Climate Action, Eamon Ryan will launch ECO-UNESCO’s updated ‘Youth For Sustainable Development  (YSD) Programme manual 2020’ which is designed to support youth leaders and educators participating in the YSD Programme and introduce new methodologies, resources and support systems into the education curriculum that focuses on the environment and climate change.

Elaine Nevin, National Director of ECO-UNESCO said “Environmental Education and education for Sustainable Development provide a comprehensive framework for young people to build knowledge and awareness of key environmental issues and to develop skills, competencies and leadership to address these issues.  Our future generation of leaders are aware of our current climate crisis and want to be equipped with the knowledge and tools to create a more sustainable planet. We are keenly aware of the importance of building capacity not only of our young people but also of their leaders, mentors and teachers who can support them in their ongoing work.  We therefore hope that our Educator’s Week 2020 alongside our Sustainable Development Manual will assist those working with young people.”

ECO-UNESCO hosts the annual Young Environmentalist Awards which recognises and rewards young people for their environmental projects and efforts . Educator’s Week will offer insight and guidance on how mentors can assist these young people with their projects.

Virtual events taking place during Educator’s Week 2020 include Development Education & the Curriculum, Mentor Focus Groups, Transformative Pedagogy; learning our way to sustainability and Mentoring Action Projects; getting the most out of the Young Environmentalist Awards.
