Lough Rea Hotel & Spa rallied for huge crowds

30 August 2010

The Galway Summer Rally concluded at the weekend at the Lough Rea Hotel & Spa to a large crowd of well wishers and supporters of the event.  The hotel had its busiest weekend ever due to the rally, which also boasted record numbers on both Saturday and Sunday.  Thanks to glorious weather and a big rally entry the weekend was a huge success.

“The rally competitors and supports were admirable and seemed to really enjoy themselves and helped with the buzz throughout the entire weekend.  The event has given the hotel great momentum leading into the winter which is already showing signs of being 15% busier than last winter,” said Barry Kilroy, Operations Manager of Lough Rea hotel & Spa.

The rally was a counting round of the Top Part West Coast Rally Championship and The Honda Cup Ireland.  Gary McPhillips and Mark Tierney in a Ford Escort Mk2 lead the rally from start to finish and went to win by 16 seconds from Robert Barrable and Damien Connolly in a Ford Focus WRC. It was Barrable’s debut rally in a World Rally Car and a huge performance from the young man who had the winning co-driver from the 2009 Mor Oil Galway Summer Rally sitting with him.

According to the Mayor of Loughrea Michael Maher: “The rally was a huge success for Lough Rea and the boost to the town and surrounding area helped everyone from retailers to hotels to petrol stations.  It really was a brilliant weekend and because the weather was so good people turned out at various different stages to watch.  I believe there were over 40,000 spectators in attendance, which I was delighted with.”

The Lough Rea Hotel & Spa has some great package offers available at the moment including 1 night B&B with dinner for just €69 per person sharing.
