Stolen bike setback for Cystic Fibrosis cycle around Ireland

An appeal has been launched for the recovery of a bicycle that was to be used for a round-Ireland fundraising cycle in aid of Cystic Fibrosis. Cathal Phelan from Dundrum had hoped to begin his marathon bike ride around the country at the end of this month but has suffered a terrible set back after his Trek bicycle was stolen from outside the UCD student centre on the campus at Belfield yesterday (Tuesday 7th Sept).

Cathal and his friend Conor Doyle are due to set off from Dublin on October 9th and take in the entire coast of Ireland on a journey which will last about a month.  The pair decided to embark on the fundraiser after learning about Cystic Fibrosis, which their friend Avril McCarthy has.  The trio met while studying at UCD, where Cathal is currently studying in advance of attending college in London next year.

“This is so disappointing”, said Cathal, “as the bike is probably the most expensive part of the trip.  I also need it for training purposes so it’s a big setback.  I locked the bike directly outside my window at UCD to keep an eye on it but by 5.00pm my lock was on the ground, broken, and the bike gone.”

“Don't worry though, the cycle will still go ahead. This is just a pretty annoying kick in the teeth and especially since it was my birthday yesterday! But I'll walk the trip if it comes to it!” he added.
