28 June 2012

Former Cork hurler Tomás Mulcahy was joined by his former on pitch rival, Tipperary's Pat Fox, to practice their golf swings ahead of the Mercy University Hospital Cancer Appeal Annual Golf Classic which takes place in Fota Island Golf Club on Friday 13th July.

The format for the competition is a fourball, and teams are invited to sign up now for the popular fundraising event. Entry is €400 per team, and this includes green fees, refreshments on arrival, goodie bag, and dinner with wine following your round of golf.

Encouraging golfers from all over Cork and beyond to register for the upcoming event, Micheál Sheridan, CEO of the Mercy University Hospital Foundation said "We're expecting that up to 40 teams will take part in the Golf Classic, and by participating, each will be playing their part in helping to diagnose and treat cancers early and effectively whilst ensuring that patients receive the best care possible during their cancer journey at the Mercy Hospital. Their involvement will support the development of hospital services over the coming year in such an important way."

Funds raised through the Golf Classic will support the development of hospital cancer care services in a number of key areas over the next 12 months:

  1. Supporting the development of a new Diagnostics Centre - This will ensure excellence in the hospitals ability to diagnose cancer more effectively through an investment of over €1 million into state of the art CT scanning equipment. This new technology will lead to a reduction in waiting times and better outcomes for patients.
  2. Supporting the development of a Regional Centre for Gastroenterology - Oesophageal cancer is the fastest growing cancer in the western world, with Ireland having one of the highest incidence rates, and that is why the Mercy is investing in a centre right here in Cork that will enable doctors to diagnose patients earlier, and in certain cases, be able to identify patients who might have a higher risk of developing the disease much earlier and lead ultimately to a reduction in the numbers of unnecessary deaths to this disease.

Micheál added "Our mission is to support the hospital in delivering the highest quality of patient care by generating awareness and tirelessly raising funds to support advancements and innovation in the treatment and care of patients at the Mercy Hospital, the People's Hospital. We promise to do our very best to provide you with a world class hospital, right on your doorstep, and this is only possible through the help of our supporters and donors, like the golfers who participate in our Golf Classic and the generous support of our sponsors TOSHMedical and Fota Island Golf Club."
