Step back in Time at Cork City Gaol, Sunday's Well with a Military History Show

The grounds of Cork City Gaol will provide a piece of living history on the 7th and 8th of August from 10:30am-6pm  daily when a Military Show, the first of its kind in Cork, takes place.  The event promises to be a great day out for all the family with live battles, re-enactments,a military vehicle display, archery, military traders and dealers.  Medieval and Roman Soldiers will walk alongside British and German soldiers from World War Two, not to mention the odd “Red Coat” adding to the historic mix. The event costs €5 for adults and €10 for a family.

Visitors are encouraged to dress up for the event and the most authentic outfit will win a €250 shopping voucher for Brown Thomas. Outfits can take inspiration from any genre, and there is a particular emphasis on the glamour of the 30’s and 40’s. There will also be a raffle taking place over the weekend with all proceeds going to the Tour de Munster for this year’s chosen charity, Down Syndrome Ireland. Prizes include a two night B&B and one evening meal weekend break at any of the Select Hotels of Ireland as well as two portrait vouchers from award winning photographer Ger McCarthy.  A dinner voucher for the Ambassador Chinese Restaurant and much coveted hampers from Brown Thomas as well Town and Country are also available. A hair voucher from IKON and T-Shirts are also up for grabs!

One of the organisers, photographer and history buff Ger McCarthy says; “This is the first time that there has been anything like this in Cork. Although there are many people who are very interested in different aspects of military history, if they want to experience what military life was like they have to go to Dublin, Northern Ireland or the UK, where military shows take place. We wanted to bring a military show to Cork that would be educational and entertaining. It’s interactive so that you can see, smell and touch what life was like in times gone by. Children can ask the re-enactors questions, try on helmets, watch battles and so on. There will be exhibition stands with historic information and military vehicles will also be on display for what promises to be a fascinating weekend for all.”

Re-Enactors from all over the UK and even America will flock to Cork for the weekend. They include US Airborne troopers from WW2, Iron Age Celts, The Bandenburg Commandos, The Medieval Archery Group and even Vikings. Exhibition stands include The Royal Munster Fusiliers, The Irish Army from 1916 to the present, US Civil war militaria and WW2 Memorabilia.

Although this is the first time a military show is to take place in Cork, It is hoped that the show will be successful and that it will be even bigger next year.
