The players and management at Youghal GAA Club have their running shoes at the ready as they get set to embark on a 24-hour charity run this Saturday in order to raise funds for the Mercy Hospital’s Cancer Appeal.

Ken Bulman, Manager of Youghal GAA Club said, “We are delighted to be supporting the Mercy’s Cancer Appeal this Saturday. Over 35 of the players and management will each take it in turns to run consistently for one hour, while two participants will run together throughout the night and early morning, adhering to social distancing guidelines. Each participant will be allocated a time and will run for one hour within a 5km boundary from their homes.”

While raising funds for the Mercy’s Cancer Appeal, the players will also be showing their support for Ken’s daughter Shannen Bulman Joyce who is recovering from her second cancer diagnosis in just five years.

A keen camogie player, Shannen was first diagnosed with Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma in 2014 at the age of 19, and again most recently in 2019. Shannen underwent treatment at the Mercy University Hospital following both of her cancer diagnoses and is very grateful for the support she received.

Commenting ahead of the fundraiser, Shannen said, “For the past five years, the team at the Mercy University Hospital and foundation have taken such good care of me when I was going through my treatment. They were also there for my family and made sure when I had to receive treatment in Dublin that it was possible for a family member to be with me during this difficult time. This to me was the kindest gesture and we will never repay them for this. The Mercy Foundation will always hold a special place in my heart. Their kindness and empathy is always outstanding, they truly do care. We hope the people of Cork can support us this Saturday and we will be so grateful for whatever you can donate.”
