Filmtastic! The Sulan Film Society

20 April 2010

The Sulan Film Society in conjunction with the Briery Gap Theatre, Macroom is ending their current film club season with a showing of the Academy Award Winner and Best Foreign Language Film the "Departures" on Monday 26th April 2010.

Set up by local film enthusiasts Cormac Sheil and Anne-marie Lucey 14 years ago, the enthusiastic film club allows film-goers to watch screenings of films, which would otherwise not be shown in mainstream cinemas. The Briery Gap facilitates access to the best of national and international film giving audiences the opportunity to see a diverse programme of art-house cinema not otherwise available to them locally.

Sulan Film Society organiser Cormac states: "As a film enthusiast myself I wanted to set up a club to introduce a vibrant mix of entertaining and intellectually stimulating art movies."

The Sulan Film Society is different to the other 'typical' film clubs as they moved away from the usual discussion forum.  Cormac: "The Sulan Film Society allows like minded people to enjoy a particular film in each other's company. There is no membership fee so it still feels a bit like a normal cinema type experience."

2008's "Departures" is a delightful and sensitive journey into the heartland of Japan and an astonishingly beautiful look at a sacred part of Japan's cultural heritage. The film follows Daigo Kobayashi, a devoted cellist who is suddenly left without a job. Daigo answers an ad thinking it is an advertisement for a travel agency only to discover the job is actually for a "Nokanshi" or funeral professional!

By presenting a dynamic and varied programme of cinema screening the Sulan Film Society aims to nurture The Briery Gap's existing audience, and encourage and develop new audiences for art-house cinema. They also strive to facilitate local film development whenever possible by supporting new film and film-makers, especially aspiring young film-makers in the greater Cork region. They also, in association with community partners, seek to provide Educational, Environmental and Language Development Cinema which is especially targeted at young audiences.
